About Mariella

Mariella De Leeuw at workMariella was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a very colorful multicultural city and it is there that she found her own unique style.

She started creating fashion at an early age. ”Ever since I was little I can remember, she said, always working on some garment, knitting crocheting or sewing”.

It became soon clear that textiles were her true passion. She learned how to manipulate and transform textiles into exotic and avant-garde garments. These early experiments were all self-taught.

It was not until much later that she became more refined in her techniques through her education. She attended a school for fashion design in Amsterdam, and furthered her knowledge in her trade by attending several very demanding couture sewing courses at Parsons School of design in New York City. Her time in New York was an intricate part of her becoming the artist that she is today. She worked in the garment district for several years, where she learned the ins and outs about textiles. Her work shows a unique ability to manipulate and combine unexpected colors and textures together.

A lot of attention is paid to detail. Hand beaded buttons, hand rolled and embroidered roses, and hand sewn bows are just a few techniques used in her work.

Her work evokes warmth and happiness. I know I did my job well, she said, when I see a smile appear on someone’s face when they see my work.
